Insuring Tools & Equipment That Travel

The Gap in General Liability
A common misconception is that General Liability (GL) covers your tools. It does not. GL covers damage you cause to others. Commercial Property insurance covers items at your fixed office or shop. But what covers your $5,000 generator when it's sitting in the back of your truck at a job site? You need an Inland Marine policy, commonly called "Tools & Equipment" coverage.
Blanket Coverage vs. Scheduled Coverage
Tools & Equipment policies are structured in two ways:
1. Blanket Coverage (For Hand Tools)
This provides a single total limit (e.g., $15,000) for all your miscellaneous, unregistered tools (drills, saws, hand tools). There is usually a "maximum per item" limit (e.g., $1,000). You don't need to list every hammer you own. If your trailer is stolen, the policy pays up to the blanket limit to replace the contents.
2. Scheduled Coverage (For Heavy Equipment)
If you own expensive equipment (skid steers, excavators, scissor lifts, or specialized tools worth more than the blanket per-item limit), you must "schedule" them. This means providing the carrier with the make, model, year, serial number, and value of each specific item. If an item isn't on the schedule, it isn't covered.
What About Rented Equipment?
If you rent a boom lift from Sunbelt or United Rentals, they will require you to buy their expensive damage waiver unless you can provide a COI proving you have "Leased/Rented Equipment" coverage. Adding a $50,000 rented equipment limit to your Inland Marine policy is usually much cheaper than paying the rental yard's daily waiver fee.
Theft Prevention
Tool theft is rampant in California. Carriers often require proof of forced entry for a theft claim to be valid. Leaving a generator in the open bed of a truck overnight is often excluded. Lock your trailers, use heavy-duty job boxes, and document your inventory with photos and receipts.
